Hotel Discount Sites, Should We Use Them?

Posted on August 4th, by Aaron in Unlock. No Comments

Sup fellas.

Welcome to my first evah post on Unpackthere!

Ok ok…on with it.

Right. I was reading an article, ‘10 Hotel Secrets from Behind the Front Desk‘. Written by a decade+ veteran of the hotel industry, he talks about behind-the-scenes secrets of the hotel industry with some interesting tit-bits to help you get that wonderful experience that everybody wants.

2 points piqued my interest though –

No. 7 -“‘Book on a discount site, get a discount experience”, and
No. 10 – “There’s a surefire way to get an upgrade”.

Long story short, he advises against booking hotels via discount sites like expedia, because it cuts into profit margins (and by definition, your hotel experience), while giving tips to the guy checking you in pretty much guarantees free upgrades. These points made me think, and then I realised that most of the hotels I booked over the … Read More »

November Q&A: Pros & Cons of an All-Inclusive Vacation

Posted on November 27th, by andrea in Uncover, Unlock. No Comments

This fortnight, Andrea answers a question about the pro and cons of booking an all-inclusive vacation.

Hi Unpackers,
My girlfriend and I are trying to decide on a trip to somewhere in the Caribbeans for our anniversary.  We’re debating whether an all-inclusive vacation is the way to go.  What would you suggest?
Mike
California, USA

Hi Mike,

There are so many island options in the Caribbeans. I would suggest to decide which island you’d like to go to first.  Some islands would require a car to get around and explore, and some places it’s safer to just stay close to the resort.  It really comes down to what kind of traveler you are, what’s your budget, and what you want to do during this trip.

Some things to consider about all-inclusive:

1) Flight times and dates are less flexible due to set packages.
2) If you think you … Read More »

October Q&A, Part I: Hitting the Slopes

Posted on October 16th, by andrea in Uncategorized, Uncover, Unlock. No Comments

This fortnight, Bobo answers a question about the best option for a snowboarding trip.

Hi Unpackers!

I wanted to plan a snowboarding trip with my boyfriend.  We’re trying to decide on the destination and have two places in mind.  Is it better to plan a snowboarding trip to Japan or USA?

Anonymous, Singapore

Dear Anonymous!

Both Japan and United States have world renounced ski resorts and amazing fresh powder.  Personally, the better option is the option closer to home, somewhere you can visit frequently to sharpen those skills sets to make you invincible in all types of mountains.

Japan has amazing mountain ranges with beautiful winter wonderland scenery.  The best known destination would be Hokkaido, Japan’s most northern island.  It’s geographic location benefits from the Siberian storm that brings dry, packed powder to the mountains.  Totally epic conditions for snowboarding!

Snow-capped mountains cover about half of the country in America in … Read More »

September Q&A, Part II: Tips for a Trip to San Francisco

Posted on September 25th, by andrea in Uncover, Unlock. No Comments

This fortnight, Andrea answers a question about the trip to San Francisco, California.

Hi Unpackers!

I have about 4 days in San Francisco in mid Oct, and I would like to cover the usual sights like fisherman wharf, golden gate bridge, take a ride on the ting-ting tram and have chowdered clams.  Aside from that, I would love to take a day hike in the beautiful fall coloured national parks and visit Napa Valley to stomp grapes.  Can you please advise an itinerary (includes self drive car rental!) for me please!  Thank you very much!

Mia, Singapore

Dear Mia,

San Francisco is hands down one of my favorite cities in the USA.  The weather is great, people are laid back, food choices are amazing, and there’s just so much to explore!  October could be a little chilly – so be sure to have your styling … Read More »

September Q&A, Part I: Planning For A Springtime Honeymoon

Posted on September 1st, by joanna in Uncover, Unlock, Unwind. No Comments

This fortnight, Andrea answers a question about travelling between three very different places for a honeymoon

My fiance and I are planning to travel to Japan, Hong Kong, and Maldives for our honeymoon in late February-early March. Do you think Feb/March is a good time to travel to these locations? What would be the most inexpensive way to travel between these places?  We were thinking of flying Boston – HK – Maldives – Japan – Boston. Which area is the best to stay in the Maldives?

– Lisa, Boston

Dear Lisa,
You’ve got a great combo of places here – city, beach, old, new, bustling, and secluded.

Springtime in Japan for Cherry Blossom season

Late February to early March is a great time to hit those three destinations. The weather is not scorching hot, yet definitely warm enough to enjoy your outdoor activities.  You may even … Read More »
