Imagine three lakes that independently changes colors from green to blue to black or red unpredictably. Standing at the rightly named “Inspirational Point” that oversees the three lakes, the ethereal colored lake and thick mist surrounding the volcano have earned Kelimutu it’s supernatural reputation. No wonder locals call these sacred lakes “the lakes of evil spirits” and consider it a resting place for departed souls.
-Tiwa Ata Mbupu (Lake of the Old People aka Lake of the Ancestors’ Souls), the solo lake on the west side of the summit, is believed to be where elders and wise people go after they pass way and is usually blue.
